Communicating with Your Mentee

This module provides an overview of key communication skills (such as using open-ended questions, reflecting, paraphrasing, and using “I” statements) that can help to strengthen your relationship with your mentee. This module, along with the training provided by your mentoring program, will prepare you to be there for your mentee and to feel confident communicating with your mentee. By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• Understand different communication challenges
• Learn how to effectively respond to communication challenges
• Understand the benefits of communicating effectively in a mentoring relationship

This training module is designed to complement the in-person mentor training that your mentoring program provides. We strongly encourage you to work closely with your mentoring program coordinator to understand your mentee’s experiences and to contact program staff whenever you have questions or concerns about the mentoring relationship.
