Overcoming Common Challenges

This module explores challenges that typically occur in mentoring relationships and prepares mentors to use a six-step problem-solving method when a challenge arises. The module addresses challenges related to education and jobs, personal problems, teachable moments, and family situations. You can focus on only those challenges that are relevant for youth in your mentee’s age group. By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• Identify common challenges that occur in mentoring relationships
• Identify an effective course of action for responding to each challenge

This training module is designed to complement the in-person mentor training that your mentoring program provides. We strongly encourage you to work closely with your mentoring program coordinator to understand your mentee’s experiences and to contact program staff whenever you have questions or concerns about the mentoring relationship.
